Issues always relate to some geographical location, whether very local or perhaps city-wide.

Listed issues, most recent first, limited to the area of Cycling Dumfries:

  • Link to Tarff and Heathhall forest

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

Currently the footpath finishes at Tesco. A shared use path to Tarff would be brilliant as there is no footway at all and the road becomes a 60mph limit. From here it's a stone's throw to an access point in to Heathhall forest. There is a bridge crossing the A75 which could be utilised as a pedestrian and cyclist crossing, with a shared footway from Lockerbie Road up to the access to the bridge along Brownrigg Loaning. A safe crossing point would have to be installed to cross Lockerbie Road to Heathhall forest on the E side of the roundabout. Reducing the speed limit on Brownrigg Loaning to 30mph would improve access for cyclists to this point, but a path is also needed for people on foot travelling from Noblehill, Calside and Georgetown.

  • Access to Cuckoo Bridge Retail Park

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

The Maxwelltown Cycle Path runs along the back of the Cuckoobridge retail park, but there's no easy access from the path into it. At the moment cyclists and pedestrians have to come off the path, cross the Glasgow Road at the lights (which are very slow) and then go into the retail park via the exit from the KFC drive-thru window, which is potentially quite dangerous. It would be quicker and more convenient to have a path from the cyclepath into the car park directly. We note that the new Aldi seems to have a direct entrance being built, which we welcome

  • Wayfinding: Moffat Road to Caledonian Cycleway

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

It's possible to get to the new shared-use path near the High School from the Caledonian Cycleway/ St Mary's Industrial Estate / Edinburgh Road using cut throughs and back streets but it's not at all clear. A couple of signs on the corner of the Moffat Road / Carnegie St, Greystone Crescent, and the Edinburgh Road and St Mary's Road path entrances, plus a fingerpost at the junction of the three paths at the foot of the Caledonian Cycleway would be really helpful to make the most of this developing off-road network

  • Torthorwald cycle route

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

Torthorwald is only a couple of miles from Dumfries but very few people are willing to cycle on the Lockerbie Road/ A709. An off-road path running parallel to the road down to Heathhall forest would connect up with the Caledonian Cycleway and provide an accessible route into town.

  • Safe crossing of Alloway Road for new school

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

When Schools for the Future moves all of the Lochside schools onto one site, there will need to be a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists to the new site. At present there is a traffic island, but crossing with current levels of traffic is already difficult with children. It is also near a lorry training site so there are learner HGV drivers.

Lochside primary school currently has one of the highest cycling rates of all schools in the county - and the area is one of the more deprived areas in Dumfries, so car ownership levels are low

  • Join Mill Road to College St bike route

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 0 threads

There is now a nice cycle path that takes you from the river away from Devorgilla bridge, but there is no easy way to go from there to the College Street cycle track or Terregles Street as both Market Square and Howgate Street are one-way going the other way. Adding an 'except cycles' sign and allowing contraflow cycling along Market Square (which is not a fast or busy road), combined with a crossing across Buccleuch St on the east side of the street would provide an alternative route through town when the Whitesands is closed (or the Loreburn Bridge). At the moment, to get across Buccleuch street you have to cross in three cycles of the light and there are railings preventing pedestrian and bike access to College Street. This would also benefit pedestrians.

  • 'Except cyclists' Greenbrae Loaning suggestion

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

There is a short section of one way road at the end of Greenbrae Loaning. This road appears wide enough to accommodate a contraflow cycle lane which would make travelling across town by bike easier.

  • Skate Park link

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

There is no link from the NCN to the skate park on Kingholm Road. A shared use path from either or both ends of the NCN would be useful.

  • St Michael's roundabout

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

There is no straightforward way to negotiate this roundabout for cyclists or pedestrians. The principle need is a safe way to access Dock Park via Pumpfield Loaning.

  • Proposed Georgetown link path

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

The roundabout on Georgetown Road by Spar is difficult to negotiate for cyclists (and pedestrians). The suggested link bypasses this and provides easy access from a large area of housing on to the shared use paths in to town from Calside Road. This link is currently a narrow footpath with a 90 degree corner. By widening and realigning it could become a shared use path to easily link the people to the paths.

  • Lack of safe crossing of Garroch Loaning

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

There is no signalised crossing between the end of the Maxwelltown Cyclepath and the cycle path on the other side of the Garroch Loaning that joins up with the new hospital site. This leaves pedestrians and cyclists having to wait for a gap in the traffic (with poor sight lines because of the viaduct)
